Dr. John E. Lofthus

Dr. John E. Lofthus has been a trusted name in La Jolla periodontics since 1989. For more than three decades, patients in San Diego and surrounding communities have relied on his deep clinical expertise, his calm and methodical approach, and the quiet confidence he brings to even the most complex cases.

Dr. Lofthus earned his Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of Southern California before going on to UCLA School of Dentistry, where he graduated with honors and was recognized for outstanding performance in both academics and clinical care. While at UCLA, he conducted research in the Departments of Radiology and Periodontology — an early indicator of the scholarly rigor that has defined his career.

His postgraduate training began with a general practice residency at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in San Francisco, where he focused on periodontal and oral surgery and participated in studies on ridge augmentation. He then completed his advanced specialty training in Periodontics at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center and UCLA, where he served as Chief Resident — contributing original research to the Journal of Periodontology in the process.

Dr. Lofthus began seeing patients in La Jolla in 1989 and established his private practice in 1992. His career reflects not just longevity, but a lifelong commitment to evidence-based care. He has lectured on guided tissue regeneration, ridge augmentation, and implant maintenance; served as a former faculty member at UCLA School of Dentistry; and remains an active Faculty Club member at Spear Education, where he facilitates interdisciplinary case discussions and mentorship among colleagues.
